Give meaningful retirement gifts

What to get a colleague who is retiring (that isn’t a watch or whiskey)

Three Fondfolio books I made recently for retiring colleagues, two with Walnut wood covers and one with Maple wood.

Search for “thoughtful retirement gifts” or “gifts for a retiring colleague” on Google and you’re confronted with a barrage of options that seem to be anything but — a Japanese chef’s knife, a fancy map of the world to stick gold pins into, goatskin gloves, audiobook subscriptions, gardening gear, hiking poles, golf clubs, engraved watches. The list of retiree clichés goes on, and none of them seem like they’d mean very much to anyone at any stage in life.

Retirement is a major, often abrupt, life transition — and a good gift from an employer is an opportunity to celebrate the work that person did and help their colleagues say goodbye in a way that feels meaningful to everyone.

Collaborative gifts, like Fondfolio, are perfect for this. They give each co-worker the time and space to express themselves and share personal stories, memories, and kind words that the day-to-day of working together rarely leaves room for. That might mean a memorable moment from a big project, or simply the small, specific things they’ll miss about having that person around.

To make it even more special, you might plan a going-away party and present the book you all made together right there in the room — so you get to see their reaction, and everyone can discover what each other wrote. Good vibes, guaranteed. You can even draw on the contributions for speeches or games throughout the party.

And when the celebration ends and this person steps into their new retired life, they’ll have a tangible reminder of every connection they made throughout their career. That matters more than it might seem. According to the longest-running study on happiness, the biggest challenge people face in retirement is replacing the social connections that work once provided. A Fondfolio is a reminder not just of the relationships someone built, but that they’re capable of building them — and can keep doing so. There’s a Japanese proverb that captures this perfectly: “One kind word can warm three winter months.”

Of course, any gift is only as meaningful as the effort behind it. Think about the most meaningful gifts you’ve ever received — chances are they were handmade, or took someone real time to coordinate, or both (a Fondfolio is both!).

At the end of the day what makes work meaningful is rarely the work itself, it’s the people. So what better way to mark the end of a career than by collecting words from the people who made it worthwhile?
